An interesting first hand account of a settler in the western Illinois frontier... the author was writing a bare bones , factual description of her life, which was interesting, if not filled with lots of detail. My low rating is due to the poor quality of the reproduction: the caveat given is correct... there WERE problems of poor xerox quality, small type, etc, but the worst was a duplication of page 40 inserted instead of page 60. Frustrating.The cover art has nothing whatever to do with the text.

They said it was the 1936 Lakeside Classic A Picture of Emigration, it was a 1998 reproduction of the book, not even close to the value I bought it for, returning it. NOT COOL
The subject matter seems boring but it is actually a great book once you think about how it applies to today's immigrants. I recommend this book as a great first reference about emigration to the U.S. by the first group of settlers. Of course remember to take the book with a grain of salt as everything is more than likely not true.
The book is about the emigration of the Burlend family from rural England to the wilds of Illinois in the 1830s. It gives us a glimpse into the life of this family through the eyes of Rebecca Burlend...the decisions to be made, the sorrow of leaving home for the unknown, and the hardships they would face once they arrived in the new world. As a decendent of this courageous woman and her family, I am proud to recommend this book.
I bought this book as result of genealogy research. My great grandmother wrote this book and I wanted to know the reasons and the feelings of moving here. Found myself in her words.
