Cambridge, October 1933. Inside the old All Hallows Church on All Hallows' Eve, Doctor Adelaide Hartest bears witness to the final moments of a dying stranger.
Despite the dagger plunged into the stranger's chest, the death is ruled a suicide, compounded by a formal confession before death. The victim, it is revealed, is known to Scotland Yard, and Assistant Commissioner Joe Sandilands is sent all the way from London to investigate.

If you want the best of Cleverly and Joe Sandilands, start with Folly du Jour. I fell for Sandilands in that book, and have read all of that series, plus two other Cleverly-written series. I've been anxious to read more, but Cleverly must be "jumping the shark" in Diana's Altar. The first third of the book has almost no action and less Sandilands, who is debonair and charming as well as craggy handsome, smart, and well connected at all levels of British society. The first third of this book was polemics, description, politics, and history. Oh, and two bodies were discovered.
Enter Joe Sandilands --- finally --- and there's a long, boring meeting of several officials concerned with the impending investigations. I felt like I just dropped in on a committee meeting in which all sorts of in-group info is shared but I was definitely on the outside.
The mystery: Where is the plot and when does the action begin? (The action is Joe Sandilands moving cleverly about his diverse and well- populated world.)
Cleverly is a fine writer and everything that isn't happening in this book is well-written.. I hope it gets better. I'm not much more than a third of the way through the book, but I stopped to read the reviews. I wanted to know if it's just me (maybe Brits can follow it more easily) so I was conflicted to learn that others are having trouble with it too.
My advice is to read her other books and have fun!

Diana Altar (Audible Audio Edition) Barbara Cleverly Terry Wale Soundings Books Reviews
I was rather disappointed. The Last Kashmiri Rose (the first Joe Sandilands book) was so good but in each of the following books Joe seems to become more pompous and less likeable. I don't plan to read any more of them.
It's a period mistery, the early 20Th century after the war in England. There is one good mistery inside it, on a long and imperial England divagation. It's readable, but not a great book
I've read all the books in this series and they just get better and better. Not all mystery writers are able to develop characters with the depth that Cleverly does. Then she creates interesting situations and challenges for them. And, not everything turns out as her protagonist, Joe Sandlihands, wanted it, but, as a feminist, I was pleased to see a professional woman maintain her independence. All in all, a satisfying read.
Eleanor Sullivan. Author of Graven Images, a Singular Village Mystery
Ms. Cleverly seems to be running out of steam. The last two or three installments in this series have not been anywhere near as good as the first four, which is understandable nonetheless disappointing. I hope she can repeat her former successes.
This is the first of the Sandilands stories that I have read and I found it very entertaining, quite complex with many twists and turns, but a great read. There are multiple confusing storylines in this novel and while I always suspected that the eventual villain might indeed be a villain, it was somewhat of a surprise when he turned out to be a villain. The romantic portion of the novel was frustrating, but I came to accept it at the end of the story. It will be interesting to see if this romantic arrangement continues in future novels. Altogether a very entertaining story and I look forward to future novels in the series.
We have read the previous Joe Sandiland's novels and enjoyed them completely. This one seems like it is written by a different author. The story does not flow well and seems to lack direction. In truth, I could not finish the book because it seemed too poorly written.
"Diana's Altar" is the latest "Joe Sandilands" novel by British author Barbara Cleverly. Set in Cambridge in the early 1930's, Scotland Yard Assistant Commissioner Joe Sandilands is sent up to investigate the suicide of an agent Sandilands knew, as well as the suspicious death of a young woman at a private house in the area. Both deaths seem connected, and the connections seem to embrace spying among Cambridge students and graduates. Now, this is 1933 and is a preliminary bit to the spying scandal exposed a few years later. Joe also finds the doctor knew in London who is practicing in Cambridge. She had attended the dying woman at the country house party. The story does revolve around a villain, with a past...and present that is shockingly bad. Add in the Cavendish Lab in Cambridge and the first vestiges of the eventual Soviet spy scandal and you've got quite a story that won't have it's "end" for another 20 or so years.
I usually write more about the plot but here the plot is so complicated I can't write too much. The complex plot is not a bad thing here; it seems Ms Cleverly gives readers a good workout.
Joe Sandilands has been the subject of 12 previous novels by Barbara Cleverly. I've read one other, which I enjoyed, but I don't feel that I can judge how "Diana's Altar" fits in with the series as a whole. This book is very complicated but very interesting and Cleverly includes a lot of 1930's events - both political and social - in the book. I thought it was a very good read, and I'll look for more Joe Sandilands books.
